As the UK accelerates towards net zero, nuclear energy is playing a vital role in delivering reliable, low-carbon power. But building this critical infrastructure takes more than just advanced technology, it requires proven materials, delivered with precision and consistency. In his latest article, our Nuclear Commercial Director, Will Pearson CEng FIMechE, explores how Tarmac is helping deliver the next generation of nuclear projects by ensuring the right materials are in the right place, at the right time. From consistent, traceable supply chains to integrated, low-carbon logistics, the piece offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to support the next generation of nuclear projects. We’re proud to share a remarkable ecological find made during a routine bat assessment that we commissioned with Mountfield Ecology near Rochester, Kent. DNA analysis confirmed the presence of the grey long-eared bat, one of the UK’s rarest mammals, with fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining. This is the first confirmed record of the species in north Kent, far beyond its known range in southern England. Working with Mountfield Ecology, we’re ensuring the roost is protected during essential building works and supporting wider conservation efforts through our involvement in the North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve. At Tarmac, we’re committed to sustainable development that respects and enhances biodiversity. Find out more, here: https://loom.ly/xWupxQk Image: Brown long-eared bat in flight. Tarmac Contractor Safety Forum Stancombe On Wednesday we had the pleasure to attend the Tarmac Contractor safety forum which took place at Stancombe quarry. Thanks to hosts Paul Williams, Simon Grey, Alex Johnston and Greg Lacey. It was a very open honest interactive session where contractors were invited to share their thoughts and ideas on key safety process including inductions and the overall safety expected whilst working on Tarmac sites. The Walter’s team were on hand to provide an excellent presentation on the challenges of interaction between mobile plant and people. This included them supplying a new Volvo A40 where the team took part in an all round visibility check which highlighted the challenges operators face even with advanced technology. Another excellent forum thanks

Great insights from my colleague Will Pearson CEng FIMechE on the critical role materials play in delivering the UK’s nuclear future.   In his latest article for Tarmac, Will highlights how success in nuclear infrastructure isn’t just about cutting-edge technology or regulatory approvals - it also depends on having the right materials, at the right place, at the right time.   From consistent, traceable supply chains to integrated, low-carbon logistics, the piece offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to support the next generation of nuclear projects.   A must-read for anyone working in infrastructure, energy, or construction 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBVW5PNM

A few weeks ago, we hosted a group of international experts from the UK, Spain and Australia at Tunstead, our most significant and historically important site, to show them the progressive restoration of the area, and the different techniques we use there. We spent the day discussing the history and development of geomorphologic quarry restoration within the Quarry, emphasising the evolving relationship between industrial activity and environmental stewardship. Thanks to everyone who joined us! Enrique Morán Montero, James Rhodes, Dr R Neil Humphries, Rick Bright, Harley Lacy

Earlier this week we attended Ringway Worcester’s Innovation Day - a fantastic opportunity for suppliers to come together and showcase the latest in technology and materials. As a key supplier of asphalt materials into Worcester, we were delighted to exhibit and demonstrate our Ultifastpath solution - a single-layer footpath material produced at our Pershore plant. It was great to see the innovation in action and share how this solution is helping to deliver faster, more efficient footpath construction.

Have you noticed there’s a real buzz in the city right now? 🐝 Our Tarmac Kier Joint Venture team recently joined forces with Transport for London to create habitats for solitary bees, butterflies, and other invertebrates at 3 different locations on TfL’s road network. The team were able to make bee hotels by repurposing waste wood they had been collecting for habitats on the A40 (Hillingdon), Rowley Lane (Borehamwood) and Redbridge roundabout, which are also part of TfL’s wildflower verges project - where we have tailored our verge cutting regime to encourage wildflowers to flourish - making the new invertebrate habitats a great addition to the areas 🦋 Meanwhile, at Lambeth Bridge, our team found an opportunity to connect with their local community by welcoming students from Fairley House School to the site to plant sunflowers, wildflowers, and shrubs 🌻 They’ve also installed a new flower bed on the site compound and over the summer, have some plans to get creative in transforming this area into a better home for nature. With many species of bee, butterfly, and invertebrate populations in decline, we’re doing what we can to make a big difference to our local wildlife, and projects like these are important for supporting biodiversity, providing food and shelter for insects, and also adding a splash of colour to the capital! 🌺    #Environment #Sustainability #Biodiversity

We’ve just published our 2024 Sustainability Report, which reflects the progress we’re making on our journey to help shape a more sustainable built environment. This year’s report highlights steps forward across our Act strategy – in People, Planet and Solutions – and the shared efforts of our teams, partners and customers in driving meaningful change. Some of the developments we’ve made together include: 🌿 A 14% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions (from 2021) 🌱 Planting 28,000 trees and reusing over 1 million tonnes of asphalt planings 🧠 Training 127 new Mental Health First Aiders ⚙️ Launching our Innovation Pipeline and achieving PAS 2080 certification There’s still a long way to go, but we’re committed to learning, adapting and working with others to build a net zero future. You can read the full report here 👉 https://loom.ly/7NJ1WOU
